11 1 Isn’t this an overly simplistic view of the nature of humans or the human condition? This verse at least implicitly indicates that there are good people (even though that contradicts Mark 10:18 – “there is none good but one, that is, God.”). To use this black-and-white approach to assess one’s self and to assess others would result in categorizing self and others into either the good bucket or the evil bucket. We tend to think of ourselves as good, so I think relying on this verse would tend to leave individuals putting themselves into a position of self-righteousness. On the other hand, for those who admit their sins and faults, they would have to assess themselves as evil according to this scripture, no matter how common and minor their sins. Each and every one of us (with the possible exception of sociopaths), is a mix of good and bad. I see this verse as a kind of black-and-white thinking, and I find it harmful. | |
