AnachronismAnachronism - Sword 91 The only pre-Columbian weapon I can find that was similar to a sword was the macuahuitl which was made with a plank of wood similar in shape to a cricket bat with obsidian blades mounted on the edges. It is similar enough to a sword that it is often referred to as the Aztec sword. However, the macuahuitl does not seem to fit the Book of Mormon time frame. “Some groups of Central Mexico, principally in the transition between the Early and the Late Post-Classic, probably developed this weapon” (emphasis added, Dr. Marco Antonio Cervera Obregón, “The macuahuitl: an innovative weapon of the Late Post-Classic in Mesoamerica”, Arms & Armour, Vol.3, Nov. 2, 2006, p. 146, article from a research journal). Textual Parallels 251 This verse contains elements that strongly parallel 1 Corinthians 16:13 and 1 Corinthians 15:58. The phrase "stand fast" occurs 9 times in the KJV bible, but only once as the complete "stand fast in the faith", in 1 Corinthians chapter 16. Likewise, there are 11 instances the word "stedfast" in the KJV bible, but only one that is used with a conjugation of "move" - the "unmoveable" found at the very end of 1 Corinthians chapter 15. It seems unlikely that these close proximity parallels would be written by the ancient prophet, Mormon, and much more likely that Joseph Smith was using the KJV bible as a resource to support his oral composition of the text. | |
