7 1 The main phrase in verse 7 is found with variations in several places in the KJV bible (see Isaiah 22:13; Ecclesiastes 8:12,15; 1 Corinthians 15:32; Luke 12:19,48). Note how verse 8 uses the word "advantage" while "advantageth" is used in the New Testament verse 1 Corinthians 15:32. It is strange that this element that is found only in one of the New Testament verses is also found within these Book of Mormon verses. 1 It is a little ironic that the group with Joseph at Carthage Jail drank wine the night before Joseph was assassinated (p. 101 at [History of the Church, vol. 7, chapter 9](https://byustudies.byu.edu/content/volume-7-chapter-9)).
And, Joseph Smith seems to be among those who partook (pg. 616 at [History of the Church, vol. 6, chapter 34](https://byustudies.byu.edu/content/volume-6-chapter-34)).
8 And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God--he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God. | 8 1 This verse shows some of the foolish doctrines of the world, including lying a little. But consider just a few things done to protect the institution of the LDS Church. “Inasmuch as this church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication, and polygamy: we declare that we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband” (1835 Doctrine and Covenants denies polygamy—D&C 101). This was published in the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants in spite of the fact that Joseph Smith and others were practicing polygamy under Joseph’s direction at the time. When asked by Time Magazine whether the Church still stands by the teaching that God the Father was once a man, President Hinckley said, “I don’t know that we teach it” (Time article, “Kingdom Come” by David Van Biema), in spite of the fact that it was being taught in classes and published in manuals current at the time. Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland got caught in a fib starting about 1:21 into this video “I think in the past there was a tendency to keep a lot of the [Church historical] records closed or at least not give access to information. But the world has changed in the last generation—with the access to information on the Internet, we can’t continue that pattern; I think we need to continue to be more open” (Elder Steven E. Snow, Church Historian and Recorder at Q&A with Elder Steven Snow). “There are many other forms of lying. When we speak untruths, we are guilty of lying. We can also intentionally deceive others by a gesture or a look, by silence, or by telling only part of the truth. Whenever we lead people in any way to believe something that is not true, we are not being honest.” (“Chapter 31: Honesty,” Gospel Principles at “Chapter 31: Honesty,” Gospel Principles) |

14 They wear stiff necks and high heads; yea, and because of pride, and wickedness, and abominations, and whoredoms, they have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men. | 14 |
15 O the wise, and the learned, and the rich, that are puffed up in the pride of their hearts, and all those who preach false doctrines, and all those who commit whoredoms, and pervert the right way of the Lord, wo, wo, wo be unto them, saith the Lord God Almighty, for they shall be thrust down to hell! | Textual Parallels 151 This verse contains elements that are highly similar to a pair of KJV bible verses. Compare this verse with "pervert the right way of the Lord" to Acts 13:10 with "pervert the right ways of the Lord". Also compare this verse with "shall be thrust down to hell" to Luke 10:15 with "shalt be thrust down to hell". It is odd that these phrases that are unique within the KJV bible were also written by prophets 600 years prior. |

23 Yea, they are grasped with death, and hell; and death, and hell, and the devil, and all that have been seized therewith must stand before the throne of God, and be judged according to their works, from whence they must go into the place prepared for them, even a lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment. | 23 1 According to D&C 19:6-12 the words “endless” and “eternal” do not mean without end when it comes to “endless torment” or “eternal damnation”. These verses in the D&C explain that these words are used because, “it is more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men.” When people read these words in the Book of Mormon, how do they likely understand the words “endless” and “eternal”? Is this honest communication if D&C 19 reveals the actual meaning of these words? |
24 1 This verse borrows from the beginning of Amos 6:1.

30 For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have. | 30 1 This verse references Isaiah 28:10,13. However, if you examine the context surrounding both passages, it is apparent that in the 2 Nephi 28 the Lord is saying that learning "line upon line, precept upon precept" will cause the people to "learn wisdom", while in Isaiah 28 the Lord is saying that learning in this same method will cause the people to "fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken". |

32 Wo be unto the Gentiles, saith the Lord God of Hosts! For notwithstanding I shall lengthen out mine arm unto them from day to day, they will deny me; nevertheless, I will be merciful unto them, saith the Lord God, if they will repent and come unto me; for mine arm is lengthened out all the day long, saith the Lord God of Hosts. | 32 |
